Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is seeking a candidate to serve as a Public Health Educator Associate. This role assists in conducting health education programs, training programs and activities designed to improve the knowledge of HIV disease in IDOC facilities. The selected candidate will serve as a liaison with facility health staff, meet with individuals in custody, and gather information to prepare data and statistical reports. Job Responsibilities

  1. Assist in conducting a health education program in Department of Corrections (DOC) facilities in the Southern region.
  2. Assists in conducting training programs and activities designed to improve the knowledge of HIV disease within the facilities. 
  3. Serves as liaison with facility health staff to ensure effectiveness of the program.
  4. Meets with individuals in custody one-on-one to answer questions regarding program.
  5. Gathers information to prepare data and statistical reports for the quarterly progress report.
  6. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires a bachelor’s degree in public health education or related area.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Prefers at least one (1) year of experience working with incarcerated or otherwise detained individuals or in a reentry program.
  2. Prefers at least one (1) year of professional experience working with or collaborating with an organization and administration of public health information.
  3. Prefers at least one (1) year of professional experience assisting with coordinating and educating individuals and groups with consideration to the behavioral and psychological needs of the audience.
  4. Prefers at least one (1) year of professional experience assisting with conducting public health education programs.
  5. Prefers at least one (1) year of professional experience assisting with designing training programs and activities for health education, based on a given curriculum.
  6. Prefers at least one (1) year of experience assisting with conducting presentations for professionals, both orally and in writing.
  7. Prefers at least one (1) year of professional experience assisting with reviewing and/or writing educational materials for use with audiences with differing level of comprehension.
  8. Prefers at least one (1) year of experience assisting with working with individuals and/or groups of individuals in custody or other underserved population.
  9. Prefers at least one (1) year of professional experience assisting with conducting educational and training evaluation to assess effectiveness of teaching methods.
